URBAN RESEARCH EXPO2025 STORE presents:
"Onomatopoeia in Osaka" — A Collaboration Between JAPAN MADE PROJECT and demoexpo

URBAN RESEARCH’s JAPAN MADE PROJECT was launched with the concept that “Japan’s local regions are fascinating,” aiming to share the unique character of communities across the country through collaboration with the people who live there. For this special edition tied to the excitement of the 2025 World Expo, the spotlight is on Osaka—and more specifically, on its rich culture of onomatopoeia.

This initiative is a joint project between the JAPAN MADE PROJECT and the General Incorporated Association demoexpo, with product development led by companies participating in FactorISM, an open-factory collective that showcases the creativity and charm of Osaka’s manufacturing culture.

In Osaka, communication is more than just words—it’s a rhythm, a warmth, a unique energy. Expressions like “osekkai” (overly helpful), “oshanabe-zuki” (chatty), “onomatopoeia”, and “ame-chan” (candy) reflect a local way of interacting that’s cheerful, generous, and sometimes a little peculiar. Though it’s hard to define with form or structure, this culture—believed by some to have its roots in Edo-period merchants and storytellers—has been passed down through countless everyday interactions between people.

With this in mind, the theme of onomatopoeia was chosen as a way to express and celebrate Osaka’s unique communication culture. By turning intangible expressions into tangible products, this project hopes to bring a bit of Osaka’s vibrant personality into people’s lives—whether by sparking conversation in the streets of the city, or by blending naturally into someone’s daily routine.

From August 15 to September 12, visitors to the URBAN RESEARCH EXPO2025 STORE can experience this playful approach to communication firsthand. The store will feature onomatopoeia-themed displays, message cards that might only make sense to locals (maybe), short videos that explain the meanings and rhythms behind the words, and even a mirror where you can take a photo while enjoying an icy treat—designed to make you feel “shuu!” in the best way possible. And don’t be surprised if the staff greet you with a few well-placed onomatopoeic phrases (or maybe not—shiran kedo).
