We commissioned Monkichi, a painter from the Osaka-based brand Utageya Daruma, to create original URBAN RESEARCH daruma dolls.
Utageya Daruma is a unique shop and eatery located in Honmachi, Osaka, where handcrafted daruma dolls are made and sold in a dedicated corner of the space. Going beyond traditional Japanese motifs, Monkichi’s designs seamlessly blend into modern lifestyles and fashion, offering a free-spirited and distinctive aesthetic. With numerous collaborations with various brands and companies, each creation stands out as one-of-a-kind.
Every daruma is hand-painted by the artist, making them available only in limited quantities.
Two sizes are offered: 15 cm and 9 cm.

PROFILE

Monkichi
On March 11, 2011, driven by an unshakable impulse, Monkichi set off alone for New York—a spontaneous journey. Immersing himself in the people, cultures, and experiences he encountered there, he began to transform these inspirations into his own form of creative expression.
Since 2013, he has been painting daruma dolls at Utageya Daruma, a studio based in Minamisemba, Osaka. Under the alternate name Monk Ichi, he also produces and exhibits artwork through solo shows held irregularly. His creative pursuits span a wide range of media: in addition to canvas works, he creates designs for lanterns, signage, logos, flyers, album jackets, and apparel brands.
In 2023, he launched his own shop, 9GRAHA (Navagraha), on a trial basis. He also occasionally works under another alias, Sharaku Shiki, though the distinction between his identities has grown increasingly blurred, even to himself.
Consistently centered on the theme of "Wa"—the spirit of traditional Japan—Monkichi explores expression through a multidimensional and ever-evolving artistic approach, blending diverse influences into his unique creative universe.

A special collaboration with BUTCHER, a hat artisan and versatile product designer based in Osaka, has given rise to this unique sake bag.
This eye-catching bag features a rare “Wa” (Japanese-style) aesthetic and can be worn as a shoulder bag by adjusting the length of the cord.
The designer, Tsukita-san, is a passionate lover of both fashion and sake. Wanting to create something that would resonate with fellow sake enthusiasts, he crafted the bag to perfectly fit two cans of beer.
For this collaboration, we kept the original shape of BUTCHER’s iconic sake bag, and added THE GOODLAND MARKET’s original logo as a special finishing touch.

Soft yet refined, the material reveals subtle shifts in expression depending on the angle of the light.
It features vibrant, high-grade digital dyeing, developed through years of trial and error by a weaving mill with over 150 years of history. This advanced technique allows the color to penetrate even the intricate recesses of the chirimen’s textured surface while offering exceptional colorfastness.
Each bag is meticulously sewn by skilled artisans who have long worked with Tango chirimen, including traditional furoshiki cloths—combining heritage craftsmanship with modern innovation.

This shibu uchiwa (persimmon tannin fan) is made from traditional Japanese washi paper coated with kakishibu—a natural tannin extracted from unripe blue persimmons (gara-gaki). A special collaboration with Shōen Kumihimo, a long-established artisan workshop in Uji, Kyoto, known for crafting traditional Japanese braided cords.
This playful keychain features an oversized version of the odamaki—a decorative silk-wrapped wooden core traditionally used as a small strap or charm.
We call it the "ōdamaki"—a big odamaki.
To achieve this large size, long cords must be carefully wound around a wooden ball, a task that becomes increasingly difficult as the size increases. Only skilled artisans with years of experience can craft these into a perfect, even sphere.
The result is a charming piece that highlights both the refined technique and precision of Japanese craftsmanship.
Its round, plump form and bright, crayon-like colors bring a cheerful pop to your day—whether used as a keychain, a bag charm, or simply as a decorative object.

Kojima-an is a workshop founded by the 10th-generation owner of Kojima Shoten, a historic lantern maker based near Sennyū-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto. After relocating to Amino Town, Kyōtango City, the artisan established this new studio to continue the family tradition.
Each lantern is meticulously handcrafted through a labor-intensive process: bamboo splints of various lengths are individually shaped into rings, connected with traditional Japanese washi paper, fitted onto wooden molds, and sewn together with thread to form the lantern’s intricate frame. 花と風 湯呑み

This is an exclusive collaboration product with Hana to Kaze, available only at the URBAN RESEARCH EXPO2025 STORE.
The couple, both trained in Kyoto, established their kiln in their hometown of Nagasaki. The husband is a skilled potter specializing in wheel throwing, and the wife is an expert in hand-painting the ceramics. Together, they create original, entirely handmade pottery.
Their beautifully shaped yunomi (tea cups), painted in traditional Japanese red and indigo hues, are not only functional vessels but also decorative pieces to be enjoyed on display.

As we explore the theme of Japonism, there was one element of traditional Japanese culture we knew we had to spotlight: the sento (public bathhouse). Through the lens of “life with a sento,” we want to explore what truly matters in the future of urban living.

As part of that effort, we’ve been working on the JAPAN MADE PROJECT since 2020—an ongoing collaboration with Kosugiyu, a long-established sento located in Suginami, Tokyo. By treating the sento not just as a bathhouse, but as a cultural platform that nurtures new lifestyles, we’ve explored various possibilities. Since last year, we’ve also teamed up with Sento Gurashi, the organization behind Kosugiyu Tonari, to expand this initiative even further. Together, these efforts have brought our sento project to a major milestone.

Meanwhile, what’s the current state of Tokyo’s sento culture? The number of bathhouses across the city has been steadily declining—dropping from 520 in 2019 to just 430 last year. But here’s the surprising part: usage has made a remarkable comeback. In fact, the average number of daily bathers is now hitting record highs.

This renewed interest in life with a sento is quietly gaining momentum in Tokyo.
At this month’s Urban Expo, we’ll be showcasing and selling exclusive collaborative goods with Sento Gurashi, as part of our effort to share Japan’s remarkable bathhouse culture—one that evokes a nostalgic sense of home and family—with the world.

We hope this initiative will serve as a warm and stylish handoff—a way to reimagine and carry forward one of Japan’s most cherished traditions.
