URBAN RESEARCH × THE OCEAN : Our Deep Connection

アーバンリサーチと海、その深~いつながり

Facing the Future of the Fisheries Industry

We have actively built a connection with the ocean through lifestyle initiatives, including surf culture, such as serving as the title sponsor of the ISA World Surfing Games.
Through these efforts, we came to understand the many challenges facing our oceans and began to feel a strong desire to do what we can to help. This growing awareness has led to our current initiatives, such as reusing marine waste.
It was during this journey that we encountered FISHERMAN JAPAN. Instinctively, we felt—this is where we can make a difference. As a brand that has always proposed lifestyle ideas through fashion, we knew we had found a meaningful opportunity to contribute.

URBAN RESEARCH × THE OCEAN : Our Deep Connection

FISHERMAN JAPAN, based in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, is working to reshape the fisheries industry with a bold vision called the “New 3Ks”: Kakkoii (cool), Kasegeru (profitable), and Kakushinteki (innovative). Their mission is to build a fishing industry that future generations can admire and aspire to join.
Among these values, we were especially drawn to the idea of “cool.” As an apparel company, we strongly felt there was something we could contribute—and that belief took shape in the production of the industry's first-ever fisherman workwear.
Bringing new talent into the fishing industry and ensuring its sustainability is vital for protecting the future of our oceans. And we believe fashion still holds untapped power to support and strengthen this essential connection between people and the sea.

JAPAN MADE PROJECT ISHINOMAKI SHIRT	¥11,880

Inspired by fishermen and sailors, the Basque shirt has evolved into a timeless fashion staple beloved by many. This version is offered in colors inspired by seafood from Miyagi Prefecture. Produced in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, the fabric is woven on vintage looms dating back to the Taisho era. Skilled artisans carefully set the machines to knit the fabric at one-third the speed of standard T-shirt production, achieving a density three times higher. Using slub yarn—characterized by irregular lengths, thicknesses, and textures—the fabric gains a unique uneven surface. The result is a material that is both durable and pleasantly soft to the touch.

TINY GARDEN PRODUCTS PLAYFUL PICNIC CLUB flying disc ¥3,190

Wakasa Bay in Fukui Prefecture is one of the world’s major locations for marine debris wash-up. Every winter, a large amount of marine debris carried by the Tsushima Current washes ashore along the coastline. Although local volunteers collect this debris, most of it is disposed of in landfills using municipal tax funds. Much of the marine debris consists of plastic. Viewing this not as waste but as a resource—“Precious Plastic”—Solid Lab Inc., a company engaged in local cleanup efforts, has created an original flying disc made from ocean plastic waste.

Loopach × TGM Washing Loop Bag	¥6,820

Microplastics are said to be released when we wash our clothes. Of the microplastics that have washed up in the ocean, 30% are said to be leaked from our laundry, polluting and destroying the far-flung Arctic Ocean. We have created a bag that prevents this microplastic release and contributes to ecology even when washing clothes. The shape of the bag can be used as both a tote bag and a laundry net. It is a new type of eco bag that is convenient and can block microplastics during washing.

What UR aims for is not merely to vaguely discuss ocean-related issues, but to approach them from the perspective of how to incorporate solutions into everyday life through craftsmanship. To make this vision a reality, we collaborate with three companies.
One of them is amu, which purchases discarded fishing gear and produces an original material called amuca®︎. This material rivals virgin petroleum-based materials in quality. At UR, we’ve released apparel and bags made with amuca®︎ through our collaboration with Fisherman Japan.
Next is REMARE, a company with a unique technology that allows it to recycle composite plastics—materials that are usually difficult to reuse—without breaking them down. Some of the fixtures at our venue also utilize board materials made from this recycled plastic.
Lastly, we participate in UpDRIFT®︎, an initiative led by Toyoshima & Co., Ltd. This project carefully sorts and recycles marine debris collected through beach clean-up efforts and transforms it into new, valuable materials.
These collaborations have led to the creation of a wide range of products, both large and small. Each item reflects the deep commitment and shared vision of UR and its partner companies toward the ocean.

FISHERMAN JAPAN × URBAN RESEARCH KEY CHARM ¥2,200

REMARE Co., Ltd. possesses technology to recycle composite plastics, transforming all kinds of marine debris into new resources. In Japan, 8 million tons of plastic are incinerated annually. The reason there is no alternative to incineration is that discarded plastics are not made from a single material (i.e., they are composite plastics). Recycling composite plastics is extremely difficult. While you may have seen recycled items like PET bottles, this is possible because the Container Recycling Law mandates the use of single-material plastics for manufacturing, enabling effective recycling. In our daily lives, there are many composite plastics, which generate a large amount of waste. REMARE Co., Ltd. has developed a method to utilize composite plastics as new resources without separating them. Using this technology, they produce boards made from 100% recycled plastic by utilizing fishing gear and marine debris.

What You Love Can Shape The Ocean's Future

When it comes to choosing clothes, accessories, or everyday items, what we want varies from person to person. But we like to think that there could be one shared hope behind those choices.
It’s the awareness that what we choose might help protect the ocean.
The little things we love—the everyday decisions we make—can become quiet expressions of care for the sea.
If our creations can help spark that realization, even just a little, then they’ve served a greater purpose.
With that hope in our hearts, we will continue to walk alongside the ocean.
